In small-town West Canann, Texas, high school football is everything. Coach Bud can do no wrong, provided the school's team is winning. After 35 years of coaching, Coach Bud is looking for his 23rd division title. Quarterback Lance gets his knee busted up, leaving them to depend on second-string John as their quarterback. During the typical big game, Wendell goes down hard, but they try the cortisone shot... but the team revolts against it, including Lance telling Wendell to refuse the shot (he's hurt). Mox refuses to play, and one by one, they tell the coach they won't go out on the field unless Coach Bud stays in -- he only cares about the title, not them or the game. The coach leaves, Mox gives them a motivational speech about they should play like gods, but if they lose, they lose. Lance fills in as the coach, and they go out and, playing with five receivers (is that a lot? dunno), but with seven seconds to go and losing 14-17, Billy Bob gets the ball and runs it home (he's a big boy, so the four guys on his back aren't a problem, they win 23-17. Jules rushes onto the field and kisses Mox, and that's the last time he played football; he took the scholarship to Brown. Lance became a coach, and Wendell got his scholarship. Coach Bud never coached again. |
