Ending
Eliska and Richard (nurse and surgeon, respectively) are part of the Czech resistance in the 1940s during World War II. When Richard is discovered, he runs, leaving Eliska behind. A mutual friend gives Eliska paperwork with a new name, Hana, and instructions to go into hiding. Joza, a patient that had come in and Eliska and Richard saved, gets involved with taking her back to his remote village, where the Germans have all but forgotten about. The town is small and still living in the past (Joza's cabin doesn't even have electricity), so they must marry to keep her cover. Over time, Hana grows to love Joza, who's a good provider and a gentle sort. As the war wraps up, drama. The Soviet liberators come to town, there's general celebrating, but in the morning we find the soldiers raped Helenka, but afterwards her doting admirer takes her in his arms. The girl escaping the abusive husband (who takes shelter with her father-in-law) sees hubby trying to take her baby by arranging for her to be raped, but the father-in-law kills the son and the solider, but is himself shot and killed by another soldier. The priest is killed by a trigger happy soldier. Shooting breaks out, and Lipka, the throw-away kid from the abusive stepfather, leads the girl and her baby to his hideout in the bog, and then takes everyone else there. Joza is out looking for hurt villages and bringing them back, but ends up dead. (It seems when he tried to help the young kid soldier sinking in the bog's quicksand, the single shot hit Joza). Then the good soldiers arrive, and all's well, minus Joza being dead. Skip ahead a bunch of years, and Hana returns with a guy (Richard?) to visit the home she had with Joza. The midwife/nurse woman, Lucka is walking around, and the two women embrace and say hello. (Zelary is the name of the village.) Moving film reel
