The Virgin Suicides 1999 99 R 3.0 out of 5 ducks
Ending
Sisters Therese, 17; Mary, 16; Bonnie, 15; Lux, 14; and Cecilia, 13 all live shrouded in mystery (at least to the neighborhood boys, one of whom is narrating the story, as an adult -- so what we know of them is mostly limited to what the boys learned of their lives). The girls' parents are a bit on the conservative side, and have raised the girls to be, to say the least, sheltered from the world, the sins of boys, dances, and all things fun. Dad can't make a decision, and lets mom make them all. Mom is an old-time, don't spare the switch sort of parent, who even goes so far as to make Lux destroy her records after staying out too late after the dance (despite that odd paradox of no dances). They get taken out of school and isolated in their rooms, which pretty much makes the girls desperate for any human interaction. The neighborhood boys find these blonde, attractive girls, well, attractive, but can't chat 'em up, so they settle for peeping through a telescope. The boys are invited in and meet the girls in the basement, the girls all go upstairs, kill themselves, and parents come downstairs and discover them, one by one. The parents decide to move out of town -- go figure. They all commit suicide, of course, but Lux messes with things and doesn't die a virgin, given her romp after the dance, immediately followed by getting dumped by the dude.
