K-19 is Russian's first nuclear submarine, and it experiences a break-down with its nuclear reactor on its first voyage in 1961. The sub's crew, led by Captain Vostrikov, races to avoid a meltdown of the reactor that could kill the crew as well create an international incident. After all sorts of dramatics and heroics, Vostrikov orders his men to ask the Americans for help. Vostrikov disobeys an order from Moscow to abandon his ship, and with another Russian sub approaching, the K-19 and crew are transferred over, and Vostrikov is charged with treason. Vostrikov is acquitted in court, but he's banned from commanding again. The seven guys who had entered the nuclear reactor to save the ship die after coming home. Everyone is ordered to keep the story quiet. 28 years later, the remaining crew gather at the graves of those seven men, and Vostrikov told them of trying to get the crew hero status, but was denied since they weren't at war. We also learn that an additional 20 men died later due to radiation poisoning. Moving film reel
