Fire 1996 104 NR 3.5 out of 5 ducks
Purportedly, in India they don't have a word for "lesbian" in the language. Sita just got married within an arranged deal to Jatin, but doesn’t yet know that he’s got a Chinese mistress on the side. Sita does know she’s miserable in her new marriage and confides in her sister-in-law Radha (who isn’t able to have kids). Sita begins to question the traditional ways of doing things as being done simply for tradition’s sake. Before too long, we find Sita and Radha laying together in the comfort of one another in a sin that dare not speak its name. Radha is finally told by her mother-in-law caretaker that the happenings between her and Sita are going to give the family a bad name, and they should stop. Radha’s husband also confronts her, though he feels his being celibate is some divine sacrifice (though he regularly pleasures himself using videos while in the same room with the elderly mom). Radha’s clothes catch fire from the stove, but her husband saves his mom and not Radha. Radha comments she finally is able to see the ocean (a reference to a wish of hers early on) as we see a girl walk through a meadow of yellow flowers. The fact she survived the burning ties back to a fable wherein a woman is tested by fire, and she who was free from fault was able to survive (hence, it's okay to be a lesbian). Moving film reel
