Neverland: The Rise & Fall of the Symbionese Liberation Army (Guerrilla:The Taking of Patty Hearst) 2004 89 NR 3.5 out of 5 ducks
A bunch of historical facts that bring us to 1974, when teenage newspaper heiress Patty Hearst is kidnapped from her apartment. The kidnappers were a band of political radical types, focused on prisoner rights and the working class (they called themselves the SLA -- Symbionese Liberation Army). Over a few years, the SLA robbed banks, killed two people, and seemed to convert their hostage into a member of their gang. Los Angeles Police raid and end up killing five SLA folks in a house, but Patty and two others are not there. They're finally captured in San Francisco 19 months later. Patty is charged with the one bank robbery, serves 22 months in prison, and her sentence is finally communed by President Carter. The last of the SLA members are arrested in 2003 or so, where they're charged with the murder of a woman they killed in a robbery. We close out with footage (as this is a documentary, much of it is footage) with Patty on a talk show, who asks about her childhood; she describes it as pretty much perfect. Moving film reel
