Ending
A much older Michael and the others are back, including the questionable acting of Mary Corleone. Michael is hoping to legitimize the family's interests and get the family out of the criminal element. He also tries to associate the family's finances with the Vatican by investing in the Vatican Bank. Kate is in Italy visiting Michael and the kids, and she and Michael manage to make peace. Michael also needs to find a successor, and he names Vincent Mancini. A new pope is appointed (takes the name of John Paul the First), making the dealings with the Vatican bank uncertain. Vincent tells Michael that he doesn't want the family out of the business; he wants the power to keep the family together. Michael tells Vincent to give up Mary -- "it's the price you pay for the life you choose." With that, Michael tells Vincent to call himself Don Vincent Corleone from moment on. The family gathers at the opera house for Anthony's performance on stage. Vincent tells Mary they're over. An orgy of deaths follow as loose ends are tied up. An assassin tries to kill Michael and wounds him, but kills Mary (so not only is it over with her and Vincent, it's over for her life), and Michael falls out of his chair and dies. Moving film reel
