The Human Stain 2003 106 R 2.0 out of 5 ducks
Coleman Silk is the head of the literature department at a New England college. He quits after being accused of uttering a racial slur ("spooks"), and as soon as she tells his wife, she dies of an aneurysm. Six months later, he's hanging out with recluse writer Nathan; Coleman wants him to write a book on the topic; he declines. Coleman soon admits he's having an affair with Faunia, a 34-year-old divorcee, and mother of two kids who were killed in a fire years earlier; she's divorced from ex-Vietnam vet Les. The terribly secret is that Coleman is really an African American (but a very light skinned one), and decides to tell his fiancee he's an orphan, after his first love leaves him once she learns of his heritage. (The wife, his college colleagues, and others didn't know this.) As a result of his orphan-gig, mom and the family disown him. (Yes, the movie skips a lot between then and now, too.) Les swerves into Coleman and Faunia as they drove, and they end up in the lake, and die. Les tells his VA shrink that he did what he did, but she discounted it as delusion when reviewing it with her boss. Nathan decides to write a book about the whole thing. Moving film reel
