The United States of Leland 2003 108 R 3.5 out of 5 ducks
Set in Arizona, 15-year old Leland commits a seemingly senseless murder of an autistic boy. He's arrested and sent to juvenile hall, where he meets teacher and aspiring writer Pearl. The two chat about Leland's background, although Pearl told by his boss not to speak with the boy. We also track the lives of the victim's family, which intertwines in that Leland briefly dated Becky, the troubled daughter who'd dumped him to get with her drug dealer/junkie pal. Becky's sister, Julie, is dating Allen, who lives with them since his mom died a year ago. Julie dumps Allen after the funeral of the dead boy (them dating and living in the same place is too much like marriage, eek), so Allen goes out and robs a car repair place, is arrested, and sent to the same juvenile hall. Allen is in the yard at the same time Pearl pulls some strings to get Leland yard time, and Allen stabs and kills Leland. Becky pulls her head out and realizes she's got a drug problem, and tells Julie she'll go back to rehab, and complete the program this time. Pearl flies out to Los Angeles and makes up with his girlfriend, after cheating on her with the secretary at juvenile hall; Pearl got in trouble for his contact with Leland, but probably will be in even more trouble given Leland's death.
