Who Killed the Electric Car? 2006 92 PG 2.5 out of 5 ducks
Ending
Back in the 90s, General Motors decided to roll out their new all electric car, the EV1, to comply with the new no emissions law in California. They hired 13 20-something folks to market the car to celebrities. Celebrities bought the car and loved it and soon other manufacturers start to follow suit by releasing their own versions of the EV1. The hype surrounding the electric cars is good and pretty soon GM has a 4,000 person waiting list for the car. Soon the California Environmental Board decides to drop the new emissions law, and it is speculated that it is from great pressure from the car manufacturers. The car manufacturers in turn are getting lots of pressures from the oil companies. After the law is dropped, the car manufacturers put a stop to the electric cars. The entire team hired to market the EV1 is let go and manufacturing stops immediately. GM says that of the 4,000 people only a small portion said that they would actually buy the car after they were made aware of the problems. The EV1 owners ban together and try to stop what is going on. GM starts collecting all the EV1s as their leases expire. Given the choice of returning the car or being charged with grand theft auto, everyone turns over their cars. The EV1 posse sets out to figure out what is going to happen to their "babies" and learn that they are being crushed and turned into scrap metal. The theory is that the lack of consumer interest, the greedy oil companies, and the no-backbone car companies and CA environmental board all caused the demise of the electric car. The EV1 posse have since moved on to other causes and other projects, but they still feel strongly about how the EV1ís disappeared. Currently, the car companies are working on coming up with a plug-in hybrid car and the former electric car owners are thrilled with the progress. Moving film reel
