The Serpent and the Rainbow 1988 98 R 2.5 out of 5 ducks
Dennis is an scientist who is hired to visit Haiti, on behalf a drug company, to investigate the possibility of a rumored drug that renders the user totally paralyzed -- but conscious. (The result often fool doctors, who declare the user dead.) The "zombie" drug could be used in surgery, they tell Dennis. He goes around Haiti, chasing facts from fiction, and sorting out what's real and what's superstition. The local cops -- mostly corrupt -- are led by a chap who is not at all keen at Dennis prowling around Haiti. Dennis is kidnapped, tortured a bit, but he won't go away, despite those around him being killed with voodoo and he afflicted by black magic himself. Dennis is looking up when a doctor declares him dead, and ends up buried alive -- but the zombie guy helps dig him out that night. Dennis ends up running around Dargent's voodoo place, smashing open bottles of potions and setting spirits and souls free in the process. The fires put themselves out almost immediately, and Dennis and his local helper Marielle walk away. Dennis ends up nailing Dargent into the same torture chair, nailing his scrotum to the chair, just before the chair is sucked into the the floor. Marielle tells Dennis the night-mare is over, and there's general celebrating in the streets. The end notes mention the powder is being scientifically analyzed even today, but its powers are still without explanation. Moving film reel
