Ending
12-year-old Bo lives in the middle of the New Mexico desert (near Taos) with mom Arlene and dad Charley, who's been depressed for months and cries randomly. Bo desires to flee the place for the city, and is excited when she gets an application for a credit card (which she apparently submits using some made-up data gleaned from family friend George). They get notice of an impending IRS audit, and newbie IRS agent William arrives on foot (his car broke down a few miles away) to find Arlene gardening naked. William is stung by a bee or hornet, which puts him into a semi-lucid state for three days. Bo chats him up and sees him (briefly) as a ticket out of there, but it seems William is disenchanted with his job and has fallen in love with both Arlene and New Mexico. He begins painting, and paints Bo a 41-foot long mural of the horizon he saw on the Atlantic coast, since Bo has never seen the ocean. Arlene calculates they owe the IRS in penalties for not filing taxes (they figured for what little they made, it was too much trouble for the IRS to process). George marries Consuella from the store in Taos and they move to Mexico, which really upsets Bo (although she never showed it, he was apparently her best friend). Bo uses her charge card to buy a sailboat for her dad, and soon after William and Charley chat, and as William begins to cry, Charley's depression lifts. Bo began going to school in town (versus home schooling). Eight years after arriving, William dies mysteriously, but his paintings and sketches become popular. His 41-foot drawing is sold by the family for $9,000, enough to pay for the sailboat and the IRS bill. We see Bo come back home as an adult, still carrying the briefcase William gave her (filled with the childhood treasures), and the sailboat is still sitting in the front of the house, having never touched water since arriving.
