Ending
Documentary, made by the Doug's pal: On July 2, 2003 around 8pm, Doug Bruce left his apartment on the Lower East Side of New York City. 11 hours later, he woke up on a subway car in the suburbs, going to Coney Island. He's experienced total amnesia, no idea his name, where or who he was, nothing. He turned himself into the police for help in identifying him; they sent him to hospital (they found nothing wrong), and they sent him to the psychiatric hospital (as he's technically unable to care for himself). He signed himself in, and was able to scrawl a signature (only the "D" was legible), and he made a phone call and reached an older woman (the mom of someone he dated a few times), and she and the ex-date girl sprung him from the nut house, starting a journey to rediscover his life. The film follows him doing just that over the next 15 or so months, back to England (he has a British accent), Australia to be reunited with his girlfriend Narelle (never mind the bit about his dating the New York girl, eh?). We eventually close out with him being more or less a different person, since he had to recreate it all; Narelle comments he's more sensitive and gentle now. Doug finally decided he didn't want his memory or his old self back. He was happy with his new life, believed it was possible to live without a past and simply looked forward to his future. He seems to wonder what the old self was like, but doesn't seem to hate the new one, and that's that. Moving film reel
