The Nativity Story 2006 101 PG 2.5 out of 5 ducks
If you've ever heard the Christmas story of Jesus' birth, you can pretty much guess this one out, end to end. King Herod has been ruling for 35 years, but is troubled at a prophecy that a king will be born to lead Israel, so he wants all male babies under age 2 killed. Jump back a year as three wise men talk about a celestial grouping of stars, and their relationship to the same prophecy. Hop over to Mary, the young girl helping her family harvest crops and having caught the eye of Joseph. Mary is visited by an angel telling her she will give birth to the son of God, to be conceived by the Holy Spirit. Joseph marries Mary, then Mary goes off to visit her cousin Elizabeth, who herself is pregnant (with John), though she was thought to be too old. When Mary returns months later, she's starting to show signs of being pregnant. Joseph will not bring her up on charges of being unfaithful, and he, too, is visited by an angel and in the morning tells Mary he will raise the boy as his own. They travel to Bethlehem for a census, arriving in the outskirts of town as Mary has labor pains. They get bounced over to a manger, where she gives birth, the local shepherds flock to see Jesus, and the wise men show up all as a bright star shines upon them. The wise men leave, opt not to tell Herod of the birth (as Herod had asked), and Mary and Joseph, with Jesus, head off to Egypt to flee Herod's squads of baby killers. Moving film reel
