Walkabout 1971 100 R 3.5 out of 5 ducks
Australia. Aboriginal tradition has boys at 16 go live on the land for months, doing anything needed to stay live, known as a 'walkabout'. Dad takes his daughter (16ish) and son (maybe 8) into the outback on a picnic. Dad snaps, shoots at Boy before he torches the car and fatally shoots himself. Girl and Boy wander into the outback, still in school uniforms, in search of help and water. They eventually bump into an Aborigine teen on walkabout, who travels with them and helps them find water. They walk with him, experience a bit of the Aboriginal life and see some of the effects of the whites on the land from a different perspective. The Girl and Boy abandon the last of their proper decorum and all swim naked in a watering hole with the Aborigine. He soon leads them back to what passes for civilization, an abandoned farm with fresh graves nearby. The Aborigine seems troubled by it, puts on face paints, dances, and hangs himself overnight. In the morning, the Girl and Boy leave, finding a road, and eventually back to civilization as they know it. Years later, Girl is an adult and married, and as her husband drones on about office gossip, she day-dreams into fond memories of her naked swim with the other two, as a narrator reads a poem.
