Ending
Not shown entirely in chronological order, as a warning. Jean lives on a farm, but runs off to Paris to meet his brother, who turns out to be away doing war story coverage in Kosovo. He runs into Anne (Georges' actress girlfriend), they chat and she gives him a pastry and her house keys. Jean is annoyed with Georges being gone, and tosses a paper at Maria, a beggar. Amadou sees it, demands Jean apologize, and the cops arrive; they arrest Amadou, Maria is deported back to Romania, and Jean is released. (Of course, the "trash" is really 20 Francs, we find later.) The ripple effect of the three lives colliding impacts Jean, Anne and her relationship with Georges, Amadou, Maria and their respective families. The film doesn't so much end as simply stop: dad doesn't cope too well with Jean leaving, Jean stays away from the farm, Maria is disgusted with how she treated a beggar gypsy (having begged herself), Anne's relationship with Georges balances out a bit as Georges returns from (another?) trip, but ducks into a shop to buy Anne a gift. Their relationship plugs along, and Anne's acting career moves forward fine (after being spat upon on the subway). The opening and closing are both of the deaf students at the school where Amadou works. Moving film reel
