Year of the Dog 2007 97 PG-13 2.5 out of 5 ducks
Peggy is single, childless, in her 40s, a lonely executive assistant in a friendly office. Her dog Pencil is the love of her life, and when he dies after eating an unknown poison, things get uncertain. Her next door neighbor Al invites her to dinner, but his obsession with hunting and knives is a turn-off. Newt, whom she saw briefly at the vet rushing Pencil in, calls her with a dog who needs a home, lest he be put down; she takes on the dog, problems and all (aggression and a biter). She's drawn to Newt, but his admission of being celibate ends that pursuit. Her sister-in-law and brother don't get Peggy, and themselves are absorbed with their daughter and infant son. Peggy gets turned onto animal rescue and animal rights, going so far as using her boss' checkbook to sponsor animals from slaughter (and giving adopt-an-animal to her brother and his family. When her brother and the wife go on holiday, she takes the kids to meet their animals, then tries to go to a slaughterhouse (it doesn't go well), and the sister-in-law's furs are soaked in the tub and disappear; Peggy denies involvement, but the young daughter also finds fur to be wrong now, too. She returns to find her adopted dog killed one of Newt's dogs, and her dog was put down; in a fit, she adopts all 15 animals scheduled to die, taking them home. She's fired, the city takes her dogs (on Al's complaints, she figures), and she goes to kill him with his knives, discovering the poison that killed Pencil. Her brother bails her out, Peggy gets her job back on agreeing to get help, and she quits her job, sending an email to her boss, co-workers and friends, and leaves to join an animal rights protest group; we close with her on a bus going to a protest.
