Jindabyne 2006 123 R 3.5 out of 5 ducks
Stewart, an Irishman living in the Australian town of Jindabyne, is on a fishing trip in isolated hill country with three buddies (Billy, Rocco, and Carl). Stewart finds the body of Susan, an Aboriginal woman who is kidnapped in the first few minutes of the film. It's Friday night or Saturday morning, but they decide to tether her to a tree with fishing line and finish their trip, after forming a story Carl twisted his ankle, and they couldn't leave earlier. The town is outraged at the men's actions, and it begins to eat away at their relationships (particular that of Stewart and wife Claire, who's not the most stable to begin with). He wants to let it go, as does Carl and wife Jude (who's raising their granddaughter Caylin-Calandria whose mom died), but Claire wants to do the right thing by Susan's family, though they want nothing to do with her. After being shunned, Billy, his wife and kid leave town. The others finally relent to Claire's insistence they participate in a memorial ceremony, though not invited and not really welcome, they go. Stewart speaks to Susan's father to apologize, but he throws dirt on Stewart and spat at Stewart's feet. Susan's sister sings, and the smoke representing the wandering spirit drifts skyward. Stewart asks Claire to move back home (she left in protest for his trying to ignore things, and her), she does, and we close with the killer, again on the hill, waiting for another victim, and a bee stings him.
