La Vie En Rose (aka The Passionate Life of Edith Piaf, La Mome) 2007 140 PG-13 3.5 out of 5 ducks
A biography of singer Edith Paif, who collapses during a performance in 1955, setting us back to her early years (as she prays to St. Therese, as we learn she's done throughout her life). As a young girl, Edith is neglected and abandoned by her parents, being moved from mom to grandma (mom's side), as her absent father works in a circus. Dad takes her from grandma and leaves her with his mom, who runs a brothel; one of the women there, Titine, looks after Edith. Edith loses her vision, Titine tells her to pray to St. Therese, and she eventually regains her sight. Dad comes back, brings her into his act, quits the circus, and while doing tricks on the streets, Edith reveals a powerful singing voice. Club owner Leplee discovers her, brings her into his club, but Leplee soon turns up dead. Edith is cleared of suspicion (the theory becomes a mob killing), and her voice carries her to greater fame. She meets a few stars, famous boxer Marcel Cerdan, and the two fall in love, then Marcel is killed in a plane crash. Edith is in a car accident, gets addicted to morphine, and is stricken with arthritis at a very early age (making walking a chore). She becomes alcoholic, collapsing on stage (opening scene), and goes into rehab. Edith gets out, does a series of concerts, is stricken with cancer, and on her deathbed sees her life flash before her eyes, including her dad buying her a doll she desired and learning her infant daughter is diagnosed with (fatal) meningitis. As the memories fade from view, Edith dies. Moving film reel
