Ending
Mike is a B-rate supernatural writer who typically reviews bed-and-breakfast sorts of places with cooked up haunt stories. After surfing and hitting his head on his board, he finds a postcard in his post office box from the Dolphin Hotel, telling him not to stay in 1408 (he's amused: 1+4+8 = 13). Naturally, he goes and does just that. Hotel manager, Mr. Olin, warns him strongly against it, of the 34 deaths/suicides in the room in the last 95 years of the hotel, and 22 natural(-sounding) death. Mike goes, and it's not long before little things begin happening, but it's when the clock radio keeps playing, "We've Only Just Begun," and counting down from 60 minutes (Mr. Olin warns no one has survived an hour in the room). Mike is seemly haunted by the room's ghosts, as well as his own, with the death of his daughter Katie and brief web-chat contacts with his estranged wife Lily. As the clock wears down, Mike loses it, watching all the room's three paintings come to life; he smashes the sailing ship, the room floods and he drowns. He wakes up in an L.A. hospital, Lily at his side, effectively the result of his hitting his head on the surf board. He gets released, they go to dinner, and he writes the whole thing as a story. At the post office, he tries mailing it, but three construction works there smash up the post office, revealing he's still in 1408. The room is burned up, Katie walks to him, and he gets to hold her once more, before she crumbles to dust. The clock reaches 0:00, the room is normal, the phone rings, and the operator asks if he'd like another hour, or an express check out (a hangman's noose). The clock plays the song and starts counting down 60 minutes again. Determined to decide his fate, he sets the room on fire, smashes out the window to create a backdraft, and the hotel catches fire; firefighters rescue Mike, as Mr. Olin below comments, "Well done Mr. Enslin." Mike's in hospital -- in New York -- soon is out, and he's seems to be living with Lily. She tosses his burned stuff, after he saves his tape recorder, and in playing it, they both hear him talking to Katie and telling her the three of them will always be together, and they get a sense of the power of 1408 being at least somewhat real.
