Ending
June 1946: Stalin invites Russian emigres to return to Russia (those who fled since 1917), but it's a trap: when a ship-load from France arrives in Odessa, only physician Alex, his French wife Marie and son Sergi are spared from execution or prison; they are sent to Kiev, but the KBG suspect she's a spy. She wants to return to France, but cannot (her passport was taken and destroyed). The family stays in a house with five other families, generally eat together and take turns with the laundry and bathroom. Over time, the oppressive nature of the setting and their inability to return to France leads to the marriage falling apart; Alex has an affair with Olga (another resident), and Marie falls for Sacha, whose grandmother was taken away by the KGB early on after she's spoken to Marie in French. Marie is cross with Alex for their return, and how her French-ness leaves her with an inherent defect -- she is a foreigner. Sacha plots his escape, and swims to the ship; he makes it to France. Marie is questioned about Sacha but says nothing. A month later, Alex and Marie are interrogated together, the KGB guy shows Alex the confession Marie signed (after being slapped around), and Alex is forced to sign a form to accept her guilt (or their son is at risk); Marie begs him to sign it. Actress Gabrielle befriends Sacha, and they plan to get Marie out... then Sacha commits suicide by cutting his wrists in a sink of warm water; Gabrielle promises dead Sacha she'll get Marie out. Six years later, and Alex and Sergi meet Marie at the prison; she's been released. He tells her he loves her; she tells him it's over (the stench of the affair); Alex and union leader Nina helped push for Marie's release. Two years later, and Gabrielle comes to town with a touring group, brings a passport for Marie and Sergi, and they are able to escape. Alex tells the KGB he knows nothing of their plan, and is assigned to an island in the Pacific as a medic for a labor camp. In 1987, when Gorbachev opens the borders, Alex is finally able to return to France. Moving film reel
