Ending
Small-time rancher Dan is having a hard time making ends meet, causing his wife Alice to worry, and sons William (14) and younger boy Mark. They happen across Ben's gang robbing a stagecoach, and leaving all but Pinkerton guard McElroy dead. Dan brings McElroy into town, along with the marshal and his men finding them. Back in town, Ben manages to get himself arrested, and Southern Pacific Railroad man Butterfield is determined to bring Ben to Yuma for trial and hanging. They're a few men short, so McElroy volunteers (despite recovering from being shot), so the local vet is recruited as well, and Dan volunteers for $200. They head out, slowly lose the four volunteers, particularly after the short-cut through Apache Indian lands (where Ben kills the three braves trying to kill them). They get to Contention to catch the train, and Butterfield hires the local Marshal to help them, but he quits after Ben's guys arrive in town and offer $200 for the death of every person guarding Ben; they quit, but are killed when they step outside, unarmed. Come 3pm, Dan -- refusing Ben's bribes -- and Ben run to the train, dodging lots of bullets and catching a few in arms and legs. (Dan's leg is lost already, we finally learn being shot off by his own regiment during the Civil War). Ben seems to find a bit of fondness for Dan and his wanting to see it through to prove to his son William (who tagged along), he's a hero after all, and Butterfield had promised to take care of Alice and the boys financially. Dan get Ben on the train, Ben's men fatally shoot Dan, and Ben hops off the train. The gang give Ben his gun back, he kills his own men (suddenly with a sense of justice?), and after William draws down on Ben but doesn't kill him. Content to let Dan die knowing he finished the job, Ben hops on the train, it leaves, and Ben whistles for his horse (a signal he'll either escape from the train or from Yuma prison, where he's twice escaped before).
