Ending
The kid is an infant orphaned after his unwed mom dies, and crawls into Santa's bag of toys one Christmas Eve while Santa is delivering toys to the orphanage. Having a soft spot for babies, Santa keeps the baby, the elves figure his name is Buddy (he's wearing a "Little Buddy Diaper"), and Santa lets one of the childless elves (Papa Elf) raise him. At age 30, it's apparent that at 6-foot-3, he's not really an elf, and he sets out to New York City to find his dad. He does, a blood test confirms it, but dad's a workaholic who has little time for his wife and son Michael, let alone an elf. Buddy works at Gimbels briefly (the store thinks he's an employee, and Buddy is naive about these things), where he meets Jovie, whom he asks out. Buddy's dad has to pitch a book deal on Christmas Eve, but Michael barges in and announces Buddy ran away (after leaving a note on an Etch-a-Sketch), dad tells 'em to shove the job, and leaves to help find Buddy. Buddy helps Santa get back in flight by restoring the spirit of Christmas (all of New York sing carols, led by Jovie), Buddy and Jovie marry and have a baby girl (Susie), and dad starts his own book publishing place, with the first book about Buddy, entitled "Elf."
