Elvira, Mistress of the Dark 1988 96 PG-13 2.0 out of 5 ducks
Elvira is the host of a cheap horror movie program, and finds she is the heir to an aunt's mansion in New England. She drives out there and arrives with a flair. She finds the mansion is haunted, complete with a witch's cookbook and punk rock poodle whom her uncle Vincent seems determined to get his hands on (he's into witchcraft and spells). Meanwhile, the kids of town and Robin all help her (the boys are keen on seeing Elvira working around the house in her skin-tight outfits; she wants to sell the place for cash to do her own Vegas show). The older folks in town want her gone (all ultra-conservative types). They end up having a morality social, where Elvira makes a dish from the cookbook, greatly annoying Vincent. He goes to the town council, who suggests they arrest her under a very old anti-witchcraft law in town; she's tossed in jail. The older townsfolk make up a fire to burn her at the stake, and the younger kids try to break her out (but aren't fast enough to get her out before the cop takes her to the stake); Vincent gets the book in his possession. She's tied to the stake, the fire set (kids roast marshmallows), and Elvira realizes the ring she wears gives her powers, so she creates rain to put out the fire; her guy pal Bob helps her down. Vincent is roaming the town as an all-powerful dark lord, he and Elvira face off; he gets her ring, but his hand is cut off and she gets the ring back, and when he shoots a lightning bolt at her, she's able to use the ring to deflect it back to Vincent, destroying him. The cookbook is left behind as the house burns; insurance doesn't cover act of demons, so no payment. The town welcomes her to town properly, she's the only heir to Vincent's estate, and she now has the money to do her Vegas show (we close seeing her doing her show). Moving film reel
