Ending
Documentary. Boston college grads Ian and Curtis and best pals (whose grandparents were neighbors eons ago back in Iowa) ponder -- then take action -- to see why there's corn in their hair (a DNA thing). They move to Greene, Iowa, rent an acre of farmland and try their hand at farming. It's not long before it becomes apparent that farming isn't the back-breaking labor it was 100 years ago, and with the U.S. government subsidizing it, also a bit less risky. (They were paid $28 for their acre for the crop from the federal government, spent $350 in seed, land and equipment rental, and stood to earn $330 from selling the crop, eking out a modest profit). Helpful farming neighbors, genetically altered seed, and powerful fertilizers and herbicides all made for seemingly easy work. They spent their ample leisure time looking into how much of the corn produced (60%) into feeding cattle, which historically grazed on grass, but folks indicated the meat quality also suffers as a result (if they weren't slaughtered, the corn-based feed would kill the cattle, which are given antibiotics to combat the effects -- cows are reportedly the largest consumer of antibiotics in the U.S.). They also delve into how high fructose corn syrup was rare in the 1970s, and is now present in virtually everything: a cheaper alternative to sugar. The observation that we now spent 17% of our take-home pay on food, down by half of three generations ago. In the end, the pair sell their corn at the co-op, and return to Greene six months later as their farmer pals, the Pyatt have their farm auctioned off and are moving elsewhere. Moving film reel
