The Event 2003 110 R 3.0 out of 5 ducks
A series of unexplained deaths that occur among the gay community in New York's Chelsea district. Nick (she's a she) is a district attorney, investigating the most recent case, an apparent that seems suspicious to her. A bunch of flashbacks as Nick interviews victim Matt's friends and family. Matt's mom and sister are reasonably supportive of him, his coming out (they all knew already), and his revelation he has AIDS. Mom even tries to help by making him marijuana-laced cookies, but in the end, the suicide wasn't isolated to his own hand. The Event was a essentially a going away party for Matt, with many of his friends and several family members gathered and Matt circulates the room saying goodbye and what-not. (They make a videotape of the event, which is something Nick later got as part of her investigation.) At the end of the night, with a few close friends gathered, Nick is hooked up to an IV drip filled with morphine, takes a bunch of pills, and each of the half dozen or so present hug/kiss him or shake Matt's hand, and his mom kisses him last. In an interview with Nick, Matt's mom tells her that many people die alone, but this was beautiful. One by one, six of Matt's friend all confess to being the one who assisted the suicide, effectively preventing prosecution. Nick ends up confessing to her mom that she helped her hero cop father kill himself. The AIDS clinic doctor, Brian, spreads the unclaimed ashes of his dead patients along the streets of New York, and Nick apologizes for arresting him, etc. Brian tells her Matt threw up the pills after losing consciousness, but he couldn't put them back into Nick's mouth, and Matt's mom does it and holds him. Brian plays a CD Matt left for him, of Matt playing his cello and a song he wrote for Brian. We end with a montage of the people left behind, living their lives, and Mona taking her girls to Matt's grave. We close with Matt's answering machine saying he's in heaven, but leave a message; his mom leaves him a message that she loves him, and says goodbye. Moving film reel
