Kit Kittredge: An American Girl 2008 101 G 2.5 out of 5 ducks
Ending
Depression era. Young Kit's dad's car business goes under; she sees him eating at a soup kitchen and realizes they're now part of the poor people. Her dad leaves to find work in another town (but he promises to write every day); her mom takes in boarders to help pay the mortgage. Kit works with her two friends, and a few of the kids who come to the house to help out (for food or clothes, including Will and Countee), but one of the drifters are going around stealing, and sees a tattoo on him. The future reporter in Kit has her wandering around interviewing people about the thief, Kit finds shoe prints at a crime scene that match the shoes her mom gave to Will. One of the boarders' cousins also has the tattoo Kit saw on the thief. Kit and crew go through the trunk of the one drifters and find a number of stolen items (but not the money stolen from her family, preventing them from paying the mortgage). Kit goes to get in the car of the suspects, and tells her pals to call police; the kids first tell adult Lucinda, who calls police and they then all hop in Lucinda's car and follow the bad guys. Kit asks the kids about how Lucinda called police from her house, as the phone doesn't work -- thus, Lucinda is in on the scam. They find the money where the crooks buried it, but the bad guys are chasing them, they find the kids and take the money back... but Lucinda feels remorseful and returns the money to Kit. Fast forwarding to Thanksgiving, and Will and Countee thank her for solving the thefts (showing they're not to blame); Kit's mom invite them to stay for Thanksgiving dinner. Kit's dad comes home, apologizes for not writing, and he's staying home to find work and be with the family. The newspaper editor shows up and Kit's child-perspective on the Depression is printed, so now she's a published reporter. Moving film reel
