I've Loved You So Long (aka Il y a longtemps que je t'aime) 2008 115 PG-13 3.5 out of 5 ducks
Juliette was just released from serving 15 years in prison for killing her 6-year-old son. Her husband left and family disowned her, but on the day of her release, her younger sister Lea takes her into her home (much to the annoyance of her husband, who somewhat worries about their two adopted children). Juliette is aloof and quiet, but is able to finally land a job as a medical records clerk (she was previously a doctor at the time of the killing). She connected with Lea's co-worker Michel and her parole officer/police captain Faure. Faure and Juliette chat somewhat casually, and he finally plans to take the trip he mentions frequently, only Juliette learns from his replacement at the police station he didn't end up going on holiday, his resolve was to commit suicide. Juliette slowly confides more with Michel, but it's Lea discovering a letter from the dead child to his mom, written on the back of a lab analysis report, that tips her off to what really happened. Lea chats with the family friend (himself a doctor), and he consults with a few specialist colleagues that the lab report reveals the boy was in a terminal condition, and Juliette killed him out of a sense of mercy and not wanting to see her child suffer a slow death, not out of some malevolent intent. Juliette moves into her own place, is accepted full-time at the medical job (it was a 3-week trial to hire or release from the job), and her life is slowly moving to a more normal, brighter future. Moving film reel
