Nothing Like the Holidays 2008 99 PG-13 2.5 out of 5 ducks
The whole Rodriguez family is getting together at the parents' home in Chicago for Christmas: mom Anna and store owner dad Edy, soldier just back from Iraq Jesse, not-quite-star Roxanna back from Hollywood, and oldest son Mauricio from New York, with his Jewish wife Sarah (who's not quite ready to trade career for children, much to Anna's annoyance). Oodles of drama in the week before Christmas, with family pal Ozzy seeing his brother's killer back on the streets, Jesse running into his ex-girlfriend Marissa (and her new boyfriend Fernando). After an eventful dinner, Anna announces she's divorcing Edy, whom Mauricio immediately assumes is having another affair; the others are shocked (any previous affairs are news to them). Jesse's dark secret is he traded watch jobs with Lenny, who was killed instead. Roxanna contemplates returning to Chicago, given the career isn't taking off. Mauricio discovers Sarah is reconsidering a job she previously passed up due to travel demands (they're now offering greater compensation and duties). This and that, and after Edy fails to win Anna back, and pull down the tree he's been promising to cut down for the past 25 years, he's hospitalized (trying to pull down the tree with the car). Sarah gives Anna the medications Edy is taking, and those she promised not to reveal (not to ruin the holiday). Ozzy faces the brother's killer with a gun, doesn't kill him and tosses the gun in Lake Michigan; he and Roxanna hook up. Jesse comes to terms with Marissa moving on, Sarah tells Mauricio she wants to try starting a family now, and she's taking the job. Anna learns Edy has cancer, and the divorce talk is over. We close out with a big Christmas dinner, along with family pal Johnny brings Edy a 60" big screen TV from his TV store, and they all dance. Moving film reel
