Carl has been avoiding everything since Stephanie dumped him three years ago; he says no to every offer, suggestion and invitation. After a pal suggests he attend a 'Power of Yes!' seminar led by Terrence, Carl has to say yes to everything, something of a covenant with himself. He does so immediately afterwards, giving a ride to a homeless guy, letting him use his phone and giving over all his cash. His car then runs out of gas, and he mimics the "yes" thing, until he's offered a ride from pretty Allison back to his car; he glibly comments about making out, and she kisses him. He's curious about saying yes, and in doing so sees his job improve (as a loan officer, he's now approving every loan, even as small as $250), relationship with friends brighten, and actually going to a band gig puts him in contact with Allison again; they begin dating, and she invites him to a 6am jogging/photography class she leads. Things go great, he's promoted for his innovative "micro-loans," and he and Allison hop a plane to Lincoln, Nebraska. When trying to board a plane, the FBI detains him for terrorist suspicions (given his new-found Yes to flying, taking Korean, and taking accepting a Persian bride, and his short-lived marriage). Allison isn't cool with the not knowing of the 6-month marriage and Carl's hesitation to her moving in together offer, and she splits. Carl throws together a bridal shower for his best friend and his fiancee at the last minute (all the people he gave loans to attended), and confronts Terrence about the covenant, who tells him you say yes when it makes sense, but you be open to it; then the two are hit by a truck whilst in Terrence's car. Carl wakes in the hospital, borrows a motorcycle from Lee (male nurse/loan applicant), and apologizes to Allison; all's well. During credits, we see the two riding down a hilly road on arm/leg/chest-mounted roller-blades invented by another loan applicant. |
