Yonkers Joe hustles, setting up schemes to cheat at cards and dice. He has a girlfriend, Janice, but it seems iffy at times if she's a partner in crime or he really loves her. Joe Jr., his 21-year-old son, is in a group son (mentally challenged), but is being booted due to his age, his vulgarity and recent trend toward fighting. Joe is heading to Las Vegas for that last score before retiring, hustling both the house on behalf of two unsuspecting Miami high-rollers (along with a few pals, including the guy who loads his dice). The dice-mechanic decides he can't be too involved, and Joe Jr. volunteers to help swap out the house dice for the rigged ones. He gets away clean (but is asked to leave the casino by the pit boss), and as the game heats up, the pit boss asks Joe to show his hand, which flashes empty (he dumps the dice in Janice's mixed drink). They get out of the casino before the heat gets too much, but they can't find Joe Jr. Eventually Joe spots him, he's at a bus station, and getting ready to return to New York. Joe Jr. already called the group home, apologized, and they are welcoming him back. Joe tries to get him to stay, but Joe Jr. hugs him and gets on the bus. We close with Joe and Janice at an outdoor cafe in Las Vegas, and Joe is just oozing with pride in his son and his having planned the trip, having maps, schedules, the whole bit; roll credits. |
