Ending
The Sullivan family is moving to Manhattan in the spring, soon after the death of their son, Frankie (who died of a malignant brain tumor). Mom sort of blames John (hubby); Christy (10) and Ariel (6-ish) are also quietly coping with his death. The summer is hot, more so on the night that Sarah and John have the hot lovin'; she gets pregnant. On Halloween, the girls are trying to trick-or-treat when they meet Mateo, who lives in their apartment building. Mateo slowly becomes a part of the family, but after he passes out and falls down the stairs, it's apparent he's not well; Sarah's pregnancy is also complicated, and baby and mom are at risk. Sarah is hospitalized, racks up huge hospital bills, but the baby is born, prematurely. She needs a blood transfusion, which Christy gives -- she's been carrying this family for a year, she tells her dad. The baby gets the blood, and just as the baby starts to show signs of life, Mateo stops, and dies. When discharged from the hospital, the bill is $30,420... but has been paid, by Mateo. They go home with baby Sarah Mateo, have a big reception of all the neighbors (they rarely spoke before), and Christy uses the last of the three wishes her brother gave her to wish her father finally say goodbye to Frankie; dad finally lets go.
