Ending
1959. A class project has the kids writing their predictions for the future into a time capsule; little girl Lucinda seemingly suggested it, but there appear to be forces at work as she jots her own thoughts onto paper. Now 2009, Professor John and son Caleb chat about alien life (mom's dead). John teaches his class about determinism, the thought that all things happen as the result of something else, then rushes off to Caleb's school to open the time capsule. The same teacher as Lucinda hands the drawings to the children; Lucinda's ends up with Caleb -- just a sheet of numbers. Caleb takes it home, John starts looking over the numbers in a semi-drunken haze, and finds patterns to the numbers (the date and victim count from 9/11, etc.), and ponders if the numbers not circled are future events. John learns from the teacher Lucinda is long dead and tries to chat with her daughter Diana. John narrowly avoids being killed by a crashing plane (after noting the GPS coordinates of his location are in the letter). John detects an accident waiting to happen at the subway, canít prevent it, he figures the letter is a key to bad things. Diana and her daughter Abby warm to John's earlier attempts to talk, rummage through Lucinda's things and find a clue that implies the world's end will be caused by a solar flare. He, Caleb, Diana and Abby look for a safe place to hide out, discovering the letter lacks any coordinates -- wait, those are in the closet at the school where Lucinda was found hiding in 1959. He gets them, leading him back to Lucinda's old home. He tells Diana (elsewhere with the two kids) to meet him; she doesnít. A stranger kidnaps Caleb and Abby; Diana gives chase, crashes and dies (it's the date of her death as in the letter). At Lucinda's, John follows some tire tracks, finds the kids amongst a pile of black smooth stones (an offering from the strangers, of sorts); the stranger took the kids after sensing Diana wouldn't bring them to Lucinda's home. "They" are here to take the kids to safety, in a UFO. It takes only the kids, and lifting off, we see numerous other UFOs doing the same thing, presumably with other kids. In the morning, John drives around as solar flares destroy the city; John tells his family that Caleb is safe, and the city is vaporized by the intense flares, breaking Earth into pieces. From a far of place, the kids are dropped off on a paradise planet environment. Moving film reel
