Ending
Steve hasn't had a good story in a while and his employer, the L.A. Times, is laying off reporters due to declining sales. After crashing his bike, he wanders around and near a statue of Beethoven, he meets Nathaniel, who's playing a violin with only two strings; they get to talking. In watching Nathaniel, he's not quite right in the mind (schizophrenia). After Steve checks with Julliard, he learns he was a student there, one of their most gifted students. Steve writes a story about Nathaniel, and a reader donates him a cello. Steve delivers it, with the condition that he stays close to a safe facility (both for his sake and the care of the cello, in part after Nathaniel reveals he's been mugged 14 times). Steve gets Nathaniel into a rehearsal of an orchestra, and arranges for cello lessons for Nathaniel (condition that he stays in a care facility, despite Nathaniel's preference to sleep on the street). Nathaniel's cello instructor touches him inadvertently, setting Nathaniel off, but Steve finally finds him and gets him the paperwork to allow Nathaniel's sister to be his executor. Steve, Nathaniel, the sister and Steve's ex- all to go the concert hall and watch the orchestra perform. In voiceover, Steve questions if he really helped Nathaniel or not, that Nathaniel still has his problems, though at least he no longer lives on the streets. Moving film reel
