Ending
As a boy, Carl watched with awe as his adventurer/hero Charles rise to popularity, and then depart, vowing only to come back when he had the living version of a creature he claimed to have discovered. Walking home, Carl finds Ellie playing in abandoned house, and she's equally enchanted with Charles. The two become adventurer pals, share the dream of living on Paradise Falls, marry, grow old, and Ellie dies. Now 78, Carl has little left to live for, but developers are trying to force him to sell. After he bonks a guy with his cane after they smash his mailbox (that he and Ellie painted as newlyweds), he's ordered to the retirement home. He instead fills thousands of balloons, and when the retirement home guys arrive, he floats with his house into the sky, in the process taking along overly optimistic but absent-fathered lad Russell, age 8 (who wants to ear his Elderly Assistance badge so his dad will come to the ceremony). They float along, pass through storm clouds, and end up in South America after all, near the falls. As they walk there, they meet a curious bird whom Russell names Kevin, and a dog, Dug, who can talk thanks to a special collar. They're pursued by a few mean dogs, seeking the bird for their master. Turns out the dogs work for Charles, who's living there seeking the mysterious creature -- the bird variety, Kevin. Carl figures out that (a) Charles ain't such a great guy, and (b) he'd hurt them to find Kevin. They flee, Charles chases them, and gets the bird, and Kevin. Carl has to rescue Russell, Dug and Kevin, and does. During a big fight on Charles' blimp, Charles falls off, but the house floats away. They return home, Russell gets his badge, and Carl is there to stand-in for his dad, afterwards taking him to Fenton's Ice Cream to sit on the curb and watch cars, as Russell used to do with dad... while the blimp covers over Fenton's, with a rope ladder just above the handicap parking stall.
