Ending
George is a comedian who got his start doing stand-up before moving into silly sorts of films. He faces the reality of being lonely when he learns he has an advanced stage of leukemia that has a low survival rate; he tries to apologize to Laura, a woman with whom his relationship ended poorly years before. Ira is trying to get into comedy, and his roommate Mark does comedy on TV and is trying to court Ira's dream girl, neighbor Daisy. George sees Ira and his comedian pal Leo at a club, and offers to hire them to write material for him; Ira accepts, but says Leo wouldn't be interested. In George's first performance with Ira's material, it's a hit (with some hiccups), and Ira is hired to write more material and act as an errand boy for George. George opens up to Ira about the disease, his bad breakup with Laura 12 years ago; Ira encourages him to try to make amends for past mistakes. Ira discovers Mark has since slept with Daisy. At a Thanksgiving gathering, Ira invites George, who mentions he also wanted to hire Leo; Leo gets angry at Ira. Laura has also softened her rude tone with George, and his doctor tells him his disease is in remission thanks tot he experimental drugs he's taking. Laura sleeps with George, who's afraid to tell her he's going to live, but Ira mentions it to Laura's kids (she's married) while he's watching them as mom's with George. Hubby Clark learns George isn't dying, the couple fights over the tryst, but when Laura says she'll leave Clark for George, George isnít so sure he wants that... but she changes her mind and that marriage is saved with lots of apologies. George (and Ira) are beaten up by an angry Clark, their partnership over and Ira fired. Ira goes back to his deli job, starts dating Daisy, and his routines are less shaky; George watches a show, visits George at the deli, admitting the jokes aimed at him were dead on, offering suggestions for material, and we're left with a hint that they may resume their friendship after all.
