(500) Days of Summer 2009 95 PG-13 4.0 out of 5 ducks
Told in a leap-frog approach between days 1 and 500, we have a torn timeline that pieces together something like this. Tom is now reflecting on the love affair he had with Summer (hence the title), a woman who attracts the gaze of men everywhere she goes. Tom is a firm believes in love, Summer doesn't care for that emotion, serious relationships or boyfriends. They meet at work where he's a greeting card writer (having abandoned his architect schooling), and she comes to work as the boss' assistant. They more or less get along, but early on Summer tells him she's not into relationships or serious "things," and he says he's okay with it (though given his outlook, he's clearly anything but okay). Suffering through advice from his two guy pals and his too wise for her age younger sister, he navigates the awkward nature of the non-relationship, but they drift apart (Summer has left for a job elsewhere), and he spirals into a dark depression; his boss tells him to pull himself together, as his angst is apparent in his greeting cards. He bumps into Summer, she invites him to a party at his place, and he eagerly accepts. Once there, we see a split screen of his expectations (they hug, kiss and she ignores all but him), and the reality (she's a civil hostess and mingles). When he sees her showing an engagement ring to another party guest, he bolts, and hits bottom. Tom quits his job and finally having the motivation to pursue his architect-ing. At his favorite park, he bumps into Summer, who says she never believed in love until she met her now-husband, and essentially Tom was right about love, but not about her being the one for him; they part company. At an architectural firm, Tom arrives to a job interview to find his competition (a woman), they chat briefly, and find they both visit the park he says is his favorite; she says she has seen him there before. They both wish the other bad luck to bolster their own chances for the job, Tom is called in, and he pauses, asking her out to coffee afterwards. She declines, and then accepts; he introduces himself, and she says her name is Autumn. Moving film reel
