Dr. Adrian is part of a worldwide geophysical team investigating the effect of solar storms onto the earth; the team learns the earth's core is heating up. U.S. President Wilson is warned, and precautions must be taken to save at least some of the population, lest all die; writer Jackson learns the same thing. The world's nations rush to build survival arks as lots of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions make a mess of the place; Jackson works to save his kids and ex-wife Kate in the midst of it all. Tickets are being sold for the limited number of seats on the various nations' rescue arks, though some version suggest they're building spaceships, not boats. The decline of the earth means fewer ships than were planned are finished, and several are destroyed by the natural disasters. Dr. Adrian makes a passionate plea to bring everyone aboard there's room for, tickets or not. The American ship's motor gets jammed; Jackson is able to get the ship moving. The floods rise and the ships float to safety; several weeks later, they realize the tallest mountains are no more, the earth's plates shifted and now Africa is the first continent to become visible, and they sail toward it; Dr. Adrian and President Wilson's daughter Laura get together, and Jackson and Kate get back together as a family.
