Everybody's Fine 2009 100 PG-13 2.5 out of 5 ducks
Widower Frank is preparing for the holiday arrival of his four grown children: symphony conductor Robert, dancer Rosie, and executive Amy all phone in they can't make it; artist David doesn't call, but Amy tells Frank he's not coming, either. Against medical advice (a work-related lung condition), Frank decides on a road trip to re-connect with his too-busy children. He starts with David, but he's missing in action, and Frank heads to Amy's place after leaving him a letter. (We also overhear calls between the two sisters trying to figure out what's going on with David.) At Amy's, Frank learns his grandson's grades are top notch, and Amy admits the kids hide the bad news from him, just like mom used to do for Frank; he leaves, giving Amy a letter as well. Frank heads to Robert's, and a call between Amy and Robert reveals David is in Mexico, arrested, and not to tell Frank (yet). There, Frank learns his son isn't a conductor, but a percussionist (drums, y'know), but he's happy. Frank leaves, setting a letter on Robert's drums. Robert gives Rosie the head's up, and when he arrives in Las Vegas, she meets him (Frank's medication also got stomped in a misunderstanding with a homeless guy). Rosie is asked to babysit her friend's kid, and a phone message suggests to Frank that Rosie's apartment is just to impress him; he gets ready to leave, and gives her a letter (again, mentioning it'd be nice to have everyone home for Christmas). Another phone call: David is sick and in hospital, the arrest was something drug-related. Flying home without his meds, Frank has a heart attack on the plane, and in a dream, tells the kids to tell him the truth, and they do. Amy is having an affair, Rosie's gay and the baby is hers, Robert says his expectations were too high for them, and David is there but won't talk. Again awake and in hospital, Frank's three kids are there. They tell him David over-dosed in Mexico, and after denying it, cries with his three kids. Frank manages to find and buy one of David's paintings (of power lines, what he worked on and caused his lung condition). Frank visits his wife's grave and tells her he's working on staying in better contact with the kids. Frank gets his wish and everyone is together for Christmas. Moving film reel
