Ending
Ryan is an independent contractor, paid by companies to fire people; his job has him frequently traveling around the country. When he's not firing people, he works on the side as a motivational speaker. In a flight lounge, he meets Alex, and they hit it off; after swapping stories, they end up at his hotel for the hot lovin', then schedule their next meeting in Florida in a few weeks. Ryan is called back to the home office in Nebraska, where they're shown the next big thing for them: virtual terminations, eliminating the need for 250+ days a year on the road to do their dreaded deeds, proposed by Natalie. She knows little of the actual work, and Ryan is forced to take her on the road to teach her. More travel, more terminations, and we learn his seminars are explaining relationships are the heaviest burden in his metaphorical backpack, more than possessions or a home. Natalie gets dumped by text, and Ryan doesn't help by saying that's like being fired over the internet. Alex and Ryan meet while Natalie is off somewhere at the current city, where the two admit they like each other; Ryan is proudly single, and Alex implies the same. Ryan ships home with Natalie for good, the end of the travel firings. Ryan invites Alex to be his date to his sister's wedding, where he needs to encourage Jim to go through with it (he has cold feet); Ryan resists, arguing he speaks against committment, but his sister suggests it'd be a good to appear not dead to her and the family. He gives the pep talk and the wedding is on. He and Alex do their separate ways, but during one of his seminars he runs off and flies to Alex's home. There, Alex answers the door, her two kids run up and her husband calls out; she closes the door, saying it's just someone who's lost; after, she explains he's an outlet from her real life. He gives some of his millions of air miles to the newly married couple to travel -- they couldn't afford a honeymoon. After a past fired woman kills herself, Natalie quits (by text), and Ryan is back at work filing people, and alone. Moving film reel
