I.O.U.S.A. 2009 85 PG 3.0 out of 5 ducks
Documentary alert. Filmed in 2007, the film examines the exploding U.S. national debt and its consequences on our economy and impact on individual citizens. The man on the street interviews reflect no one really knows the size of the debt, not could anyone explain even what a deficit was relative to the federal budget (hint: it's when we owe more money than the government earns). The reality of the Baby Boomers retiring and pulling out of Social Security -- one of the few funds that has a surplus at the end of each year, which the government then borrows from -- will magnify the crisis that much further. During filming, the national debt stood at $8.7 trillion, having more than doubled during President G.W. Bush's 8-year term. The only minor beacon of bright light came with the Clinton administration and the introduction of a balanced budget proposal (and in fact, the only five years of not being completely under water in the last 40 years were during the Clinton administration). Observations were made relative to how much foreign debt we now have ($0 in 1945, as Americans bought war bonds to support the war effort and government; at $3.5 trillion dollars of foreign governments holding U.S. government securities as of September 2009). The underlying message was a fundamental shift in government is needed to ensure lasting financial security of the country. Moving film reel
