Eat Pray Love 2010 133 PG-13 2.5 out of 5 ducks
Liz is a travel writer and visits Ketut in Bali, who reads her palm (he's a local medicine man), comments she's not seemingly happy, will lose her money but get it all back, and she must return to Bali and stay with him some day, and teach him English; he'll teach her everything he knows. Back home, Liz slowly comes to terms with the stark reality of her life: she doesn't really like being married, and feels nothing as she goes from day to day. She tells her husband she wants a divorce, and wants to spent a year wandering, starting with Italy. There, she meets Sofi, a Swedish woman in Rome, and meets others through her whilst learning Italian, embracing her passion for food and helping Sofi understand being happy with herself, as herself. They have a Thanksgiving dinner before she travels to India to meet with a guru her fling New York boyfriend prayed to (only to learn the guru is actually in New York), but there were chant sessions and such there. She meets Richard, who's there to pray and somewhat escape having lost his job, his wife and family and everything else; Richard leaves eventually, and she travels to Bali to meet again with Ketut. There, she meets Felipe when he nearly runs her off the road on her bike, and Wayan, the local natural medicine healer from the injury from the Felipe run-in. She and Felipe end up spending lots of time together, and as Liz's birthday draws near, she emails for gifts -- not for her, but to help Wayan buy a home for herself (a divorcee in a country that scorns such things) and her young daughter (her plea results in US$18,000 in offerings). Felipe asks her to stay with him, she says no, and Ketut tells her that her rejection of Felipe for fear of losing her balance is contrary to love being the very thing that makes it worthwhile being out of balance. She goes to Felipe and accepts his offer; they motor off into the sunset in his boat. Moving film reel
