Unstoppable 2010 98 PG-13 2.5 out of 5 ducks
Will is estranged from his wife and their young son, and works as a train conductor; Frank is a senior engineer with the same rail company, though Frank and others resent Will, figuring he got the job through family connections. In haste, yard guy Dewey fails to connect an air brakes hose on a freight train so a second train carrying school kids on a field trip can pass; he plans to connect the hose after the freight train moves. Frank and Will get their engine moving to the rest of their train as Will gets word that his wife's restraining order is still in place, preventing him from seeing either of them. Dewey ends up setting his train and load loose for the main track without anyone on board, but everyone figures a dead man's switch will stop it a few miles down the line... but it's not stopping, and it's carrying all sorts of hazardous stuff; they notify police. Railroad bosses are trying to figure out what to do as the media begins to grab into the story. The first few plans fail or are scrapped, and as Frank and Will get their train out of the way, the runaway races by (but clips the back of their train anyway). Frank sees the train coupling is ready to connect, and wants to try to reverse his engine and hook into the runaway and stop it. They catch up, Will connects to the runaway but messes up his foot in doing so, they slow down the train enough to prevent it derailing, but can't stop it. Frank walks the length of the runaway, manually setting the brake on each car, but his engine's brakes go out and it starts to speed up again. Will hops into a truck that speeds him up to the runaway engine, and he is able to finally stop the train. In end notes, we're told Frank is promoted and retires, Will gets back together with his wife, train dispatcher Connie is promoted to her boss's job for her work to avert disaster, and yard guy Dewey no longer works for the railroad, and istead works now in a fast-food restaurant.
