Ending
John is driving in the dark, covered in blood as we hear someone breathing in the back seat, then the breathing stops, then jump back 3 years. Lara and John are out to dinner (tense, as it's right after she had a fight with her boss), in the morning life is normal, she takes a photo of their young son Luke (a project of a photo a day until he's 18), and then she sees blood on her jacket; she starts to wash it off when they're a knock at the door and the cops are there to arrest her for her boss's murder. (He was killed with a fire extinguisher at his car, parked next to hers.) Lara is convicted of his murder and sentenced to life. 6 months ago, they steal a kiss before the guards notice, but Luke won't kiss her; legal appeals are not going well. 3 months ago, Lara attempts suicide, and John decides to break her out of prison, and gets some help from Damon, a 7-time escapee, who quickly realizes this is for real, not a what-if session as part of John's teaching job. John forms a plan, gets lots of money by selling all their stuff, gets fake documents for the three of them, does a dry escape run with a few glitches. John only will tell Lara jail won't be her life, but nothing else; she mentions she's going to be transferred to a new prison. 3 days ago, he's out of money, and ends up robbing a house where a red car's driver regularly drops cash off (he saw the car when trying to buy passports) and finds tons of cash, he takes off with the car's driver, who dies (the opening scene dead guy in the car; John dumps him). John goes to his parents' house (who are watching Luke), where dad figures out the plan but does nothing except try to say good-bye. Cops investigate the theft/fire at the house, and his shot-out taillight tip them toward John. John breaks Lara out, has Luke, and they get through airport security without too much trouble and take off for Venezuela. After the cops come, question John's parents and leave, dad opens a map book for Venezuela. In a montage, we see the homeless girl kill the boss, how the blood got on Lara, and her prints on the extinguisher (she moved it to leave). The murder case's cop wonders if the button missing from Lara's jacket would clear her, and tries to find it; he doesn't see it in the storm drain, but the audience does. In Venezuela, Luke is sleeping and Lara cuddles up with him; he kisses her on the forehead, and John takes a photo, returning to the photo-a-day project. Moving film reel
