Carter is a public defender's client, Booker, won't accept a plea bargain, annoying both the judge and his boss. Carter's wife Sharice is from money, and isn't used to living in the inner city and living on his meager salary. She pushes Carter to use her uncle's connections to get him a job in a private law firm. Carter quits his job, but instead opens his own place representing people (fighting against the system of quick plea bargains). Carter gets a few others working with him, a group of lawyers and activists who end up launching an action campaign targeting the court system, but Carter and his team are all refusing to plea cases, backlogging the system -- forcing the DA to either drop the petty and questionable charges, or see them to go trial. Over time, the effects begin to appear. The crack in the system is the guy who's floating Carter's office, who's a bit abrasive. Carter's wife decides to stand by him, and helps organize them to protest the privileged folks coming to the inner city area to make policy and profit, and go home. After a few days of gridlock, Carter finds himself in the office of the mayor (with the judge and several others present); they offer him opportunities for a job, his brother out of jail, etc. -- but he tells them to kiss his butt. Sharice gets photos of Carter with another woman, and he's setup with his drug dealer/investor pal, the woman and another guy (who just had the hot lovin' with the woman) -- and the cops raid the place. The press plays a tape of the judge threatening Carter and information Carter has been setup by police. Carter is released and walks through a crowd of supporters outside the courthouse.
