Ending
Very closely following the book (with some edits for lesser details), the film is told in two perspectives, starting with the happy couple Nick and Amy meeting, getting married and progressing to the date of their fifth wedding anniversary, when Nick starts his day by visiting a bar he runs with his twin sister Margo. He returns home to find Amy missing, a glass table broken and calls the police. Detective Rhonda and Officer Jim search the place, tagging trace evidence and interview Nick. As time progresses, it's apparent something is up, and Nick is looking more like he was involved; the appearance of a co-ed girlfriend at the college where Nick works, and rumors of Amy being pregnant, make things look more dire as Amy's doting parents also start to distance themselves from Nick. Nick retains wife-killer defense lawyer Tanner and they plot a strategy; we learn of an ex-boyfriend who claims Amy concocted a rape story and had him arrested. There's talk of financial troubles, and Nick and Margo discover a cache of expensive goods in Margo's shed, along with a Punch and Judy wooden doll set -- the anniversary gift -- minus a wooden club. The club and a semi-charred diary, chronicling Amy's life for about 5 years, are found by police and he's arrested. Cut to the Amy perspective and we watch as she stages the entire disappearance, drives to a no-name motel and hides out, until the neighbors rob and beat her, and she turns to old boyfriend Desi, who takes her in and promptly plots their reunion. After a few days, Amy stages a rape, comes on very strong to Desi when he returns home, then slashes his throat, killing him. She comes out of hiding, claiming being kidnapped, imprisoned and raped, and Nick is released. In the film, there's brief meetings between Nick, Margo, Tanner and Rhonda (longer-running in the book), but Nick decides to drop trying to prove Amy's a liar and psychopath after it turns out she's pregnant (they've not slept together since the ordeal began, but Amy retrieved and used a semen sample at the fertility clinic to become pregnant). Nick confides in Margo he will have to stay with Amy for the next 18 years; she cries. The film ends as it began, with Nick stroking Amy's air and wondering in voice-over what she's thinking.
