Joyeux NoŽl 2005 116 PG-13 3.5 out of 5 ducks
It's the trenches with the Scots and French on one side, the Germans on the other, and No Man's Land between them. As Christmas Eve, 1914, comes along and the men in the trenches are away, and singer-turned-soldier Nikolaus goes off to sing with his girl, Anna, but they return to the trenches for Christmas Eve (Anna present against rules). As Nikolaus sings to the troops, he hears the Scots playing their bag pipes, and Nikolaus sings to their tunes. Before you know it, Nikolaus is in No Man's land, carrying a Christmas tree and singing. The commanders of the three groups agree to a cease-fire for Christmas Eve, and the troops all sing and drink as one group; the Scottish soldier-priests says mass. In the morning, the three commanders again agree to a cease-fire to bury their dead, and end up all playing soccer. When the shelling starts, the Germans warn the others and invite them into the German trenches to survive; they all then go to the Allied trenches. When the Germans return to their side after it's over, Anna and Nikolaus stay, asking to be prisoners of war (versus being split up again). Anna hands over the troops letters to the French commander, and they end up being read by officials to learn of the 'treason' on Christmas Eve and Day. All the troops are posted to new assignments, but have also shown they seem to maintain the humanity beyond all the killing. Moving film reel
