The War of the Worlds 1953 85 R 3.5 out of 5 ducks
Martians are looking for a new planet to live on, and examine other planets in the solar system for options. They decide all other planets, except Earth, are not suited. The Martians crash land on Earth, disrupt power and their watches, and the figure out there's a magnetic interference from the crash site. From the military command post at this site, we learn there are more attacks elsewhere, and soon after the invaders begin to move, the location no longer answers their phones or radios. The Martians launch an attack with hundreds of spaceships that resist attack and defend themselves from our military. The invasion takes place all over the world, and all the major cities are destroyed one after one; even the atomic bomb can't stop them. Dr. Clayton (the expert) gets separated from love interest Sylvia, he finds wreckage of the bus she was on but no victims, and then stumbles across them in a church. As the Martian attacker grows near, the windows are shot out, but nothing more. They venture outside, and find the Martians are dead and their spaceships crash-landing. In a voiceover, we learn the Martians failed to anticipate the bacteria on Earth that humans have long been immune to, but that God's creation of them saved Earth and all of humanity. (Yeah, I know, a reference to God, but hey -- it was 1953.) Moving film reel
