Ending
India, 1938. Chuyia, 7, is told by her dad her husband has died (she doesn't remember being married); dad takes her to an ashram (a house for Hindu widows to live out their days in self-denial). The place is run by Madhumati, herself a widow, though now living high on the hog and pimping out women to the Brahmin, including 19-year-old Kalyani, a widow since age 9 (and who never met her husband). Gulabi befriends Chuyia, but is also the one who takes the women across the river at Madhumati's request. Out one day, Chuyia and Kalyani meet young law grad Narayan, and they fall for each other. Narayan isn't caught up in the 2000-year-old tradition of widows being locked up, and plans to sneak Kalyani away as his bride (she's cool with the idea, even if Narayan's mom isn't). Kalyani gets more defiant and refuses to work for Madhumati, tells Chuyia of her plans to marry the guy, which doesn't go over well when Chuyia tells the others. The disgrace of a widow's re-marriage has set them all off, they try locking Kalyani in her room, but Shakuntala, over the protests of the other widows, unlocks the door. Kalyani leaves with Narayan, but as she crosses the river to the Brahmin's house, she realizes the man she's been forced to sleep with is Narayan's dad. Disgraced, she demands to be taken back, and she ends up killing herself by drowning in the river. Gulabi is then taken to the Brahmin's house "to play," and by the time Shakuntala notices Chuyia is missing, she's already back home and balled up on the floor in a fetal position (the Brahmin having made use of her in Kalyani's absence). Narayan devotes himself to Ghandi's preachings, and when work reaches them Ghandi will be stopping in town, Shakuntala grabs Chuyia, pushes her way through the crowd, and gives Chuyia to Narayan (on the train with Ghandi) so he may ask Ghandi to care for the young girl.
