Before you say it, yes, this sort of goes against my policy of including musicals. That said, it's the musical version of the Romeo and Juliet story, set in New York City. The Jets and the Sharks, two rival street gangs, do the usual, melodic battles for turf and respect. Trouble brews when Tony (former head of the Jets) falls for Maria (the sister of Bernardo, the head of the Sharks). If you've never read Shakespeare, duh, the plays are called tragedies for a reason. In this case, Bernardo shot Tony just as he and Maria were running into one another's arms; Tony dies in Maria's arms. The Jets and the Sharks move to fight one another, but Maria stands between them, takes the gun from Bernardo. The cops arrive, arrest Bernardo, and take Tony's body away. Unlike Juliet, Maria lives to sing another day. |
